For the first time, this issue of Inside Moreland includes a 12-month calendar, based around the theme: Get involved!
Throughout the city each week many community members contribute time and energy to diverse activities that enhance and connect our community. National Volunteers Week next year will culminate in a special Volunteers Expo on Saturday 15 May, so come along and learn how you can get involved.
This year Council instigated a crackdown on illegal rubbish dumpers in our community in an effort to clean up our streets and neighbourhoods. The first dumper was convicted in August (see page 11) and we expect there will be more convictions to come.
Following on from Council’s Our Moreland Looking Good campaign, contamination checks were carried out on residential recycling bins from September until December. A high proportion were found to be contaminated, mainly by plastic products that cannot be recycled (see page 20). A good rule of thumb with plastic is if it can be scrunched up in your hand, it cannot be recycled and should not go in your recycling bin. This includes plastic bags, packaging and polystyrene. Inside Moreland also includes updates on the city’s vibrant arts scene, along with its library and youth services, as well as improvements to our customer service and Council’s current capital works program.
