A change for the better

Residents’ yellow-lidded recycling bins will work harder than ever from this October when Council launches a new and improved waste and recycling service.Waste truck on street

Pots and pans, as well as plastic bags, polystyrene and plastic wrapping are among the items added to the recycling bin approved list.

Moreland is one of the first municipalities in Victoria to offer such a comprehensive recycling service, which will stop tonnes of recyclable waste from being dumped in landfills every year.

Mayor Oscar Yildiz says: “The new service will ensure materials that can be recycled, are recycled.

“By giving the recycling green light to a host of new items, Moreland Council is demonstrating its commitment to helping residents reduce unnecessary waste.

“With a 388 per cent rise in State Government landfill levy charges since 2009, it is vital that residents understand the new system and work with us to get the most out of it.”

Along with the new recycling service comes a local education program right in the heart of Moreland. Polytrade, Council’s new recycling processor, will open the doors of its Materials Recovery Facility in Coburg to local schools and groups to see the facility and learn about recycling and what happens to the products we throw in the recycling bin.

Council’s new waste and recycling contracts will deliver better customer service as well as better outcomes for the environment. This will include: missed collections being picked up within two working days of being reported; spilled material being swept up within two hours of being reported; fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions being reported monthly; more waste education programs and school visits; and more public place recycling bins will be located around the streets and parks of Moreland.

Under the new service, recycling and garbage bins will continue to be collected weekly and green waste bins collected fortnightly, however, you may notice changes to your green waste collection week.

Moreland is now split into two collection  zones – A and B.

Zone A green waste bins will be collected in week one, while zone B green waste bins will be collected in week two. The day of the week when your green waste bin is collected will remain the same.

Check the new waste calendar and map online or call Citizen Services on 9240 1111 to request a copy.
