Brunswick Baths helps the healing process
Twenty-one years ago Rebecca Viney, pictured, was hit by a car. She sustained multiple fractures, a punctured lung, eye injuries and a severe acquired brain injury. Today, Rebecca has come further than anyone ever thought possible.
This is, in part, thanks to the Brunswick City Baths and its staff, who have helped her every step of the way. Rebecca attends the Brunswick City Baths three times a week, taking part in resistance, balance and strength training, swimming and balance work, together with yoga.
‘You wouldn’t even know I was in such a horrific accident,’ Rebecca smiles as she sits atop a fitness ball in the temporary Brunswick City Baths Gym in Phoenix Street, Brunswick.
‘My flexibility and strength have improved so much over the years.
I could barely lift my right arm out of the water, but after years of swimming every week, I have a lot of my strength and flexibility back.’
Although the Brunswick Baths are currently closed for redevelopment, Rebecca looks forward to going back to the improved Baths and continues her dry gym activities supported by Brunswick Baths staff at various locations throughout Moreland every week.
Rebecca’s mother Donna describes the Brunswick City Baths as a welcoming leisure centre, free from the intimidation and lycra that is often found at other gyms.
As she trains, Rebecca chats comfortably with staff between exercises, a sign that it is not only the training that has improved her health, but the social interaction with staff and other gym members.
‘The social aspect of the Baths is great,’ said Donna, ‘we often forget how important the social aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is, but it can make a huge difference to a person’s wellbeing.’
‘Personal training can be expensive, so we’re very lucky that for a small cost, Rebecca is able to make use of the facilities in Moreland and train with passionate professionals,’ said Donna.
Moreland has three leisure centres open all year round as well as four outdoor pools open throughout the summer period.
