Composting
Between 30–40 per cent of the contents of the average household garbage bin could be composted!
Compost adds life to soil and improves plant growth. Residents, businesses, organisations and schools based in Moreland can purchase a Rotoplastic 220 litre compost bin from Council for $49.50 including GST (prices correct at time of printing).
Each compost bin comes in black (made from 100 per cent recycled plastic) or green (made from 50 per cent recycled plastic).
To buy a compost bin from Council, fill in the order form (available online or at one of Moreland’s Citizen Service Centres), post the form to Council with your payment of $49.50 or bring it to a Council Citizens Service Centre.
Council will deliver your compost bin for free during business hours to any property in Moreland.
What goes in?
- kitchen scraps
- newspaper and cardboard (torn into small pieces)
- garden material (leaves, plants, twigs)
- small amounts of lawn clippings
- coffee grounds and tea bags
- wood ash, and
- even human hair!
What stays out?
Stop!! Do not put these items in your compost:
- meat and poultry
- fats and oils
- dairy products
- weeds (these can go in your green waste bin), nad
- bulbs.
No room for a compost bin?
Worm farms are ideal for units and flats.
A worm farm is a good alternative to a compost bin for people with less space or no garden. You can keep a worm farm in a small outside area that is under cover. This could be your carpark, garage or verandah.
Council does not sell worm farms. Buy them from CERES Community Environment Park in Brunswick (visit www.ceres.org.au) or your local nursery or hardware store.
For more information on compost bins and worm farms, including how to start composting, visit Council’s website.
Community Composting Trial
Composting is a great way to use what can’t go into green waste.
Moreland City Council is starting a trial for community composting, to assist residents who aren’t able to compost at home.
If you are interested in being involved in a community compost hub trial as a participant, volunteer or recipient of composted material, or would just like to know about the program contact Citizen Services on 9240 1111.
