Mayor's Message
I am proud to announce that Council is leading the way in waste minimisation.
A new waste and recycling program from October marks the beginning of great change, allowing residents to recycle more products than ever before.
For many years Council has been working towards its target of an annual 3% reduction in waste to landfill. Going out to tender for new garbage, green waste, recycling and hard waste collection and processing contracts presented an ideal opportunity to improve on our current practices and increase the range of materials being recovered for recycling.
I’m pleased to say we have achieved this and the new suite of waste and recycling contracts are a great outcome for the community and for the environment.
Moreland City Council, along with all local Councils in Victoria, must pay the State Government’s landfill levy, which has greatly increased in the past three years, from $9 per tonne in 2009/10, to $44 per tonne of waste disposed of at landfill in the current financial year.
With such an enormous jump in the costs of disposing of waste, Moreland’s new recycling service could not have come at a better time.
This issue of Inside Moreland contains important and useful waste and recycling disposal information, as well as details of the changes to the green-waste collection service. It also includes actions you can take to build a greener, healthier city that we can all be proud of.
Your Council is working hard to create a more engaged, more inclusive and more sustainable community.
We will continue to lead by example, starting with many practical changes and innovations to our services that cut costs and waste.
We want to work with residents to build a better community.
