The leftovers

the leftoversDetox your home

We all have unwanted products cluttering our sheds, garages and houses. Some of these products contain chemicals which can be dangerous to children, pets and the environment, so they need to be disposed of correctly.

Remember, you can’t put any toxic chemicals or cleaning products in any of your household bins.

Sustainability Victoria runs free Detox Your Home permanent centres and mobile collection services around Melbourne for residents.

e-waste

Byte Back is a free recycling service in Victoria where individuals and small businesses can dispose of their old computer equipment to be recycled.

Some of the items accepted by Byte Back include desktop computers, laptops, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards and network or memory cards.

The items are then disassembled for recovery or recycling. This process ensures any toxic chemicals in these products are kept out of landfill.

A limit of 10 items per visit applies.

But what about my old television?

The Australian Government is expected to phase in a national, industry-led scheme for recycling televisions and computers from the end of 2011.

Collection points will be set up where you can drop off your old TV for free to be recycled.

With many households now upgrading to digital TV, the number of unwanted televisions has increased in recent years. Residents are advised to hang on to their televisions until the Federal Government launches the new scheme in late 2011 or place it out for recycling during the hard waste collection in April/May 2012.

Other options for your old television include donating to charity or passing it on to a friend who may need a television and is willing to buy a set top box.

Reuse and recycle on the internet

Find a home for the things you no longer need, or browse through the endless list of objects that others are passing on to new homes for free!

Need a couch for your new home? Moving and want to get rid of furniture or items? From DVDs to fridges, you can help reduce landfill by passing on your old items to those who need them, or by finding something you need without having to buy a new one!

Mobile phones

Rather than leaving your old phone sitting in a drawer, drop it into one of Moreland’s Citizen Services Centres or a mobile muster collection box at participating retailers.
