Moreland gets up to speed with the National Broadband Network

NBN comes to MorelandThousands of homes and businesses in Brunswick will soon have access to the Federal Government-backed superfast National Broadband Network.

Almost 2,700 properties in an area of Brunswick bordered by Stewart St (to the north), Lygon St (east), Glenlyon Rd (south) and Sydney Rd (west) were selected as one of eight trial sites nationally.

The laying of the NBN’s fibre optic cable along streets within the site began in October last year and is now complete.

1,405 residents and businesses are now ‘NBN ready’.

How fast will the network be? It’s estimated that a movie, which currently takes several hours or more to download through most Internet connections, will take little more than a minute through the NBN’s projected 100 megabytes per second download speed.

Moreland Council’s latest CALDCOM Storyboard, ‘Connecting People’, has been created to help residents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds better understand the NBN and its impact on their lives.

Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, who visited Brunswick with Prime Minister Julia Gillard in August to launch the trial site, praised the storyboard.

‘It seems apt to have a tool which uses the oldest form of communication to illustrate this new era of telecommunications technology,’ Mr Conroy said.

Moreland Mayor Cr Oscar Yildiz said Council is developing a Broadband Action Plan, including a Digital Economy Strategy, for greater inclusion in this digital age, for residential and business communities, and Council itself. The strategy will be released for consultation in the coming year.
