On the job with one of Moreland's recycling collectors
Five minutes with Jamie, one of Moreland's recycling collectors
How long have you been a driver for Moreland City Council?
Ten years.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Traffic, parked cars and tight streets. Getting around parked cars in already tight streets can be difficult. When cars try to overtake me in busy oncoming traffic it can be very dangerous.
We all try to get our job done as quickly and safely as possible, which is much easier when other drivers are patient and understanding.
What can residents do to assist you in collecting their bins on time, every time?
If everyone made sure they placed their bins at least 30 cm apart and away from any poles, trees or cars, I could do my job a lot faster.
Many people think there are still two guys in each truck, but it’s just me, and every time I have to get out to move a bin from behind a car or tree, that’s time wasted that could be spent emptying more bins.
Any memorable moments on the job?
Every week for the past seven or so years, I have the same kids coming out and giving me a wave as I drive up their street early in the morning.
