Your recycling bin
Make sure you rinse and flatten any items for recycling and put them loosely in the bin – plastic bags can be recycled, but must be put in separately to other items. Any bagged items cannot be recycled.
All items must be empty of food or liquids. Take lids off bottles and jars, but throw the lid in your recycling bin too!
The new recyclable items listed above only apply to the Moreland municipality. Rules for what you can and can’t recycle vary between municipalities.
Be aware!! Although you can now recycle plastic bags and wrap, they need to be put in your recycling bin separately to other items. Do not bag your recyclables – if you do, the entire bag of recyclables will have to be sent to landfill.
HANDY TIP Keep a container near your indoor garbage bin for your recyclables. This will make it easier to keep all your recyclable items together until it is time to take them out to your recycling bin.
What goes in my recycling bin?
- plastic bags
- plastic wrap
- Polystyrene
- metal pots and pans
- glass bottles and jars
- milk and juice cartons (rinse and flatten)
- cardboard boxes and pizza boxes
- phone books
- office paper and envelopes
- plastic bottles and containers
- newspapers and magazines, and
- aluminium and steel cans – food cans, cooking oil tins, soft drink cans, empty aerosol cans and clean aluminium foil.
What stays out of my recycling bin?
Stop!! Do not put these items in your recycling bin:
- food scraps
- light globes
- plastic garden hoses
- glassware, ceramics or window glass
- garbage
- garden waste
- disposable nappies
- composite plastic/foil packaging
- batteries
- biodegradable plastics
- clothing/rags
- mobile phones, and
- waxed cardboard fruit and vegetable boxes.
