With more than 150,000 people living in Moreland, and a baby boom bringing on new generations, Council’s 2011–12 budget allocates $29.64 million in capital works that ensure this city is underpinned by high quality recreation and community facilities, well-maintained roads and footpaths, and good drainage.

Maintaining and rebuilding high-quality urban structure is the primary focus of Council’s budget, which is the foundation for community-building investments in the social, physical and cultural services where people need to be active and engaged, at home, work and play.

A focus on renewing public places and open spaces is reflected in Council’s ongoing budget commitments to clean up Moreland and blitz the litter that pollutes all our lives.

Capital Works Program highlights:

  • $7.40 million for roads, including footpath repairs and reconstructions, Roads to Recovery projects and re-surfacing works.
  • $640,000 towards drainage.
  • $4.34 million for open spaces, including Stage 3 of the Coburg Lake redevelopment, new netball courts in Brunswick and upgrades to playgrounds.
  • $11.27 million for public structures and buildings, including the Brunswick Baths redevelopment, CB Smith Soccer Pavilion stage 2, the redevelopment of childcare centres, and the relocation of Sussex Street Neighbourhood House.
  • $3.55 million for plant and equipment, including upgrading Council’s waste collection and recycling fleet, along with information technology and library  upgrades.

Your rates explained:

Council’s budget is developed via a rigorous process of expert and public consultation, audit information and annual review, and is endorsed by Council management as financially responsible and achievable.

Total revenue generated by rates for 2011–2012 is budgeted to be $98.5 million.

Council is responsible for the majority of streets and lanes in the municipality, except the main roads maintained by VicRoads, and this area of expenditure remains an important and significant annual cost against the Moreland budget.
