Cricket club embraces participation policy
Media Release from Cr Stella Kariofyllidis, Mayor of Moreland
Thursday 18 November 2010, Moreland City Council
The stumps are in, bats and pads out and the whites are back on as this year’s cricket season looms close.
Along with the new cricket season, Moreland Council’s policy on club ground allocations is also bearing fruit with cricket clubs actively pursuing new female membership and the clearest example being St. Andrews Cricket Club.
"It is very encouraging to see a club like St Andrews embrace our policy and take steps to cater for female players!" Mayor Cr Stella Kariofyllidis exclaimed.
"I believe this is a start of more inclusive era of sports participation and I am keen to see girls hitting one for six."
St Andrews has amassed almost a full team and is currently looking for other local clubs with girls who may be interested in playing against other girls. The focus of this new, local competition is on small sided, modified games with an emphasis on fun and skill development. The club is keen to build up its numbers and expand its female player base.
Girls training sessions are held on Wednesdays from 5.30 pm with, former Australian cricketer, Mel Jones assisting with coaching.
"Council encourages parents to give cricket a go and give their daughters a chance to experience our national sport right here in Moreland," Cr Kariofyllidis concluded.
The club uses Cole Reserve on the corner of Cumberland and Kent Roads in Pascoe Vale and anyone interested in having a go can contact the club on 9350 6704.
