Public toilets cleaned daily

Media statement from Cr Oscar Yildiz JP, Moreland Mayor

Thursday 31 March 2011, Moreland City Council

I was deeply disturbed to hear details of the horrible experience endured by an elderly visitor to one of our public toilets in Brunswick.

To have this happen to anyone is appalling and we apologise to the lady profusely.

Council takes pride in its effort to maintain the cleanliness of public toilets and ensures toilets are cleaned twice a day. In the case where faulty toilets are reported we make sure that maintenance crews rectify issues within 24 hours.

In this particular case a flushed baby nappy blocked the sewer line causing the water to overflow, which was reported by the cleaner and fixed the same day. It is possible that the lady visited the toilet between the time of the blockage and the cleaner attending.

We encourage anyone who witnesses any issue with public toilets including wanton vandalism or operational faults to contact Council immediately so the problem can be fixed as soon as possible.

Council has received 15 requests over the last 12 months for service to this public toilet. Six were due to blockages, six were due to graffiti, and three were miscellaneous service requests. However our records indicate that there are no registered complaints of water overflowing.

While the problem was rectified immediately I will be contacting the lady affected to extend our apologies personally.
