Waste service enters new age
Media Release from Cr John Kavanagh, Portfolio Cr City Infrastructure
Thursday 21 April 2011, Moreland City Council
Moreland’s waste services are on the cusp of a new age of operational innovation thanks to a new six year contract with a range of providers that offer environmentally friendly solutions to our city’s garbage, green waste and hard waste services.
“Overall we are looking at a $25 million investment that will take Moreland’s waste collection, recycling and disposal services to a new level,” Cr John Kavanagh said of the new agreement.
“The companies that were successful in the tender process have all stood out in their field of expertise and will also provide cutting edge improvements to our city including a new recycling centre in Coburg complete with an education officer.”
“In this new phase of waste services not only will our city benefit but also the environment thanks to new technology that salvages contaminated waste and reduces un-recyclable waste to 20 percent. This is a 60 per cent improvement of recycled waste that would otherwise go to landfill,” Cr Kavanagh added.
“The beauty of all of this is that after all these improvements and new services I am pleased to announce that we stand to make savings of almost $900,000 per year.”
Mayor Cr Oscar Yildiz is also excited about the new waste services and congratulates the work done by Council officers.
“The winner here is the Moreland community, which will get a better service, better value for their rates, a new recycling facility and best of all will be contributing to a more environmentally sustainable future.”
“Our challenge is to save these profits and redirect them into more jobs and better business, instead of losing these hard-won green gains to tipping fees and EPA fines,” Cr Yildiz said.
“Waste costs are only going up, so cutting pollution off at its source remains the key to success in green business.”
“I acknowledge all of the work done by our officers which has produced a top shelf job specification for a reasonable price that even saves us money,” Mayor Yildiz added.
