2. Submit a planning permit application
Submit your application for a planning permit in person or by mail.
In your planning permit application include:
- Application for planning permit form (PDF 666Kb)
- the planning fee: see a list of all planning fees
- a current copy of Title (less than 3 months old) including full information of any covenants or restrictions on the Title. For a current copy of title, go to the Department of Sustainability and Environment website and do an online title search
- extra information required: see the checklists below, and
- other information Council says you need at your pre-application meeting.
Criteria for plans
At a pre-application meeting, Council’s urban planner tells you what types of plans you need to submit with your planning permit application. If Council says you need to submit detailed plans, ask a qualified architect or draftsperson to prepare them.
Poor quality plans delay Council processing your application.
A meeting is better than talking to Council by phone or with email. At a pre-application meeting Council can see pictures or plans of the proposed project. Then Council can tell you what information you need with your planning permit application and let you know about possible ways to speed up the process.
For some projects like units or more than one house on a lot, a qualified planning consultant can help you prepare and submit the application.
Application: what happens after it is submitted
After Council gets an application, it gives the application a number and an urban planner from Council begins to process the application.
After a week Council sends you a letter. The letter:
- confirms that Council has your application, and
- gives you the name and contact details of Council’s urban planner who processes your application.
Council’s urban planner does a first assessment of the application and then may:
- ask for further information or
- decide to advertise the application or
- write a report and make a decision on the application.
