When you need a planning permit

Planning permit for a business advertising sign Usually you need a planning permit to display an advertising sign.
Planning permit for a liquor licence You may need a planning permit to sell or supply liquor.
Planning permit for home extensions You may need a planning permit to extend your home, such as build an upstairs area, a pergola or a larger living area.
Planning permit to build a driveway (crossover) You need a vehicle crossing permit and a planning permit for a new crossover if you are in a heritage overlay area or your land is next to a Road Zone.
Planning permit to build units You always need a planning permit to build more than one house on a block, known as units or townhouses.
Planning permit to demolish a house or outside buildings Usually you don' t need a planning permit to demolish a house, shed, garage or carport. Land in a heritage overlay does need a planning permit for any kind of demolition.
Planning permit for a large water tank Usually you do not need a planning permit for a domestic water tank in your backyard at home. You do for a large water tank.
Planning permit to install a satellite dish You need a planning permit to install a satellite dish if the dish is more than 1.2 metres in diameter and does not meet certain setback or visibility rules, or is more than 2.4 metres in diameter, or is to be installed in a heritage overlay area.
Planning permit to open a restaurant, cafe, bar or tavern Usually you need a planning permit to use land as a restaurant, do renovations or extensions to a restaurant or to get fewer car parking spaces than a restaurant legally needs. A cafe is considered a restaurant under the Moreland Planning Scheme.
Planning permit to remove or cut down a tree You may need a planning permit to remove or cut down a tree, shrubs or other vegetation.
Planning permit to run a business About when you need a planning permit for certain businesses to run, even if the land is in a business zone.
Planning permit to run a home business Many types of business can be run from home if they do not disturb the surrounding neighbours. You may need a planning permit for a new business from home.
Planning permit to subdivide land A planning permit is always needed to subdivide land.
