Supervising children at the pool
The Coburg Leisure Centre is an accredited Watch Around Water facility, meaning there are guidelines that must be followed when visiting the centre.
Watch around water guidelines
Children under 10 years old
Must be accompanied into the centre and constantly supervised by a parent/guardian. The parent/guardian must have a clear view of the child at all times.
Children under 5 years old
Must be constantly supervised and remain within arm's reach. If the child is in the water, the parent/guardian must be in the water too.
Unsupervised children of any age will be removed from the water if the lifeguard is concerned for their safety.
Important facts:
- The supervision of children in aquatic facilities is not the sole responsibility of lifeguards
- Lifeguards are employed on a 1:100 ratio; this is based on the expectation that parents will provide direct supervision of children
- Parents are required to provide the constant and direct supervision needed for young children.
