Responsible pet ownership: CALD COM storyboard text and images
Cell 1
Your local Council makes local laws to help make the community a safe, happy and healthy place for everybody to live.
Local laws are rules that encourage residents to consider their neighbours.
Cell 2
There are local laws about the number and types of pets people can own.
Cell 3
If you own a cat or dog over three months of age it must be registered with Council.
Pets should be microchipped. This helps Council find the owners of lost or stolen pets.
Your dog or cat should also have a separate ID tag with its name, your phone number and address, so it can be returned to you if it escapes.
Cell 4
If you own a pet you are responsible for its health and safety. Owners need to provide enough food, water, shelter and exercise for their pet.
Dog owners must clean up after their dogs by using a plastic bag or litter device to remove and dispose of dog faeces.
Cell 5
Pets must be kept in a way that does not cause a nuisance to your neighbours. Keep your pet within your property at all times unless accompanied.
Cats should be kept in the house, garage or in an enclosure at night. Obedience training will prevent your dog from being a nuisance through barking and biting.
Cell 6
Your local council has information on how to care for and how to register your pet. You can contact your local council by:
- telephoning Council
- visiting Council in person
- viewing the Council website.
