Water safety: CALD COM storyboard text and images
Cell 1
Our beaches, pools, rivers and dams are great places to enjoy and stay cool. But there are things you need to do and know to stay safe.
Cell 2
Beaches may look safe, but the sea has large waves, rips and currents, which can be dangerous.
Sunburn hurts, so use sunscreen, cover up and stay in the shade when you can.
Cell 3
Pools can be unsafe, especially for young children and babies, always supervise children.
If you have a pool it must have a fence. Even shallow water can be dangerous for babies.
Cell 4
Rivers and dams look safe, but you often don’t know what is below the surface.
Cell 5
There are ways to be safe around water.
Swim between red and yellow flags at beaches as there are lifeguards, always supervise children in pools and ask local people about safest place to swim in rivers and dams.
Cell 6
Learning to swim is the best way to stay safe in water.
Contact your Council to find out where you can learn to swim.

Newly-arrived migrants have become the focus of water safety education, with a new program launched in Victoria.
Moreland City Council says state and federal organisations have focused their efforts in reaching children and the elderly, but newly arrived migrants have gone largely unnoticed. The Council's water safety poster uses pictures to illustrate messages such as swimming between the flags and how deep and misleading water can be.
The state's Multicultural Affairs minister Nicholas Kotsiras told Aileen Phillips, migrants face many challenges in a new country, one of which is water safety.
