B - batteries - bikes - books - bottles - building waste

Batteries

Batteries contain a range of environmanetally hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmiun, zinc and nikel all of which are toxic in high concentrations. Batteries must be disposed of safely. 

Sustainability Victoria is running a 9 month free service called Batteryback for Victorian residents to recycle old batteries. Drop off points are available at:

  • Officeworks Preston, 121 Bell Street, Preston
  • Bunnings Northland, corner Chifley Drive and Murray Road, Preston
  • Coles Flemington, 320 - 386 Epsom Road, Flemington
  • Michaels Camera and Video, corner Elizabeth and Lonsdale Streets, Melbourne
  • Officeworks South Melbourne, 231 Kingsway, South Melbourne
  • Officeworks Bundoora, 1101-1181 Plenty Road, Bundoora
  • Bunnings Maribyrnong, corner Rosamond Road and White Street, Maribyrnong
  • Bunnings Hawthorn, 230 Burwood Road, Hawthorn
  • aToMik Green Cheltenham, Shop 2056, Level 2 Westfield Southland

Battery World will also accept old batteries for recycling. The nearest stores for Moreland residents are:

  • 8 Hood Street, Collingwood, (03) 9416 0274, and 
  • 1074 Sydney Road, Fawkner, (03) 9359 5111.

Take car and alkaline batteries to a Detox Your Home Permanent Drop-off Facility. The nearest centre for Moreland residents is the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre. It is free.

Bicycles

Fix your bike or recycle a donated one with help from The Bike Shed at CERES.
Free tool use and lubricants. Costs for parts and bicycles.
Open 11 am - 5 pm Friday and Saturday and 12 noon - 4 pm Sunday .

Books

Donate books in good condition to an op shop.

Buy secondhand novels and school books.

To recycle a book, remove the plastic backing and book cover and put it in your recycling bin. Council collects recycling bins weekly.

Bottles

See glass.

Building waste

Building site operators are responsible for the removal and overall waste management on building sites.

Second-hand building materials are bought by second-hand building suppliers.
