Fluorescent tubes
Fluorescent tubes and Compact Fuorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) contain mercury and should not be disposed of in your rubbish bin.
Take them to your nearest Council Civic Centre or for recycling. It is now also possible to drop your CFLs at Council's Operations Centre, 7-9 Walter Street, Hadfield.
Or you can take fluorescent tubes to a Detox Your Home permanent drop-off facility, the nearest centre for Moreland residents is the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre. It is free.
You can also take your fluorescent tubes to a Detox Your Home mobile collection.
Fridges
Phoenix Fridge Project collects unwanted and under-used fridges and other white goods. These are repaired and sold to low-income households. Moreland Energy Foundation started the project in partnership with the Brotherhood of St Laurence.
Furniture
Donate good quality furniture to an op shop in Moreland. Leaving furniture around donation bins is illegal. You could be reported and fined for dumping rubbish.
Council collects damaged furniture in the hard waste collection once a year. Wait to receive your notice before placing hard waste on naturestrip. There is a limit of one cubic metre of waste (e.g. two washing machines side by side) and one mattress per household.
You can also dispose of damaged furniture by dropping it off at a landfill or transfer station.
