Street and laneway cleansing
Council cleans Moreland’s main roads, residential streets, constructed laneways and footpaths within shopping centres to make sure our streets are clean and safe.
Street sweeping
Mechanical street sweepers sweep main roads and residential streets in Moreland regularly.
Over one year Council sweeps:
- 45,000 kilometres along main roads
- 20,000 kilometres in residential streets, and
- 13,000 kilometres of footpaths.
Street sweeping over one year collects about 3000 tonnes of rubbish and litter.
Footpath sweeping
Council sweeps major shopping areas daily. Mechanical sweepers sweep about 22 kilometres of footpaths in shopping strips seven days each week.
Stormwater pit and drain cleaning
Council cleans about 385 pits each week. Each year Council cleans approximately 20,000 pits and removes about 180 tonnes of rubbish from them.
Litter bins
Council empties 750 litter bins daily.
Dumped rubbish
Council responds to complaints of dumped rubbish within four working hours. Council removes about 150 tonnes of dumped rubbish each year.
Laneway cleaning
Council cleans laneways made of bitumen, bluestone or concrete two times a year.
Unconstructed laneways
An unconstructed laneway is a laneway that is not made with bitumen, bluestone or concrete. Council policy is not to look after unconstructed laneways.
You are responsible for cleaning and maintaining an unconstructed laneway that abutts your property. You and your neighbours should:
- remove overhanging branches
- remove dumped rubbish
- remove long grass and weeds
- maintain the laneway’s surface.
Council helps by collecting the waste from your cleanup. Put the waste in bags and place them at the entrance of the laneway and contact Council for collection.
Laneway construction
Council will construct a laneway when the adjoining property owners agree to pay for the construction costs through a special rate or charge. After Council constructs the laneway, Council is responsible for its maintenance. This process is similar to property owners paying Council to build roads and footpaths in new areas.
