Hard waste collection
Council collects hard waste from homes and units in Moreland once a year.
You can put up to one cubic metre (equal to two washing machines side by side) of hard waste on the nature strip outside your property.
Annual hard waste collection
The hard waste collection runs for 5 weeks every year. The hard waste collection for 2012 will take place during April and May.
You will receive a letter from Council two weeks before hard waste collection begins in your street. You can begin to place items on the naturestrip on the weekend before the collection begins in your street. You can view the hard waste collection areas map (PDF 322Kb) to find out your collection week.
Hard waste
Hard waste is:
- old tools and lawn mowers
- refrigerators (remove the doors)
- timber (up to 1.5 metres long)
- stoves, washing machines and other similar appliances
- chinaware and window glass (wrap heavily)
- mattresses (one per household)
- electrical appliances
- electronic waste such as computers or TVs, and
- old furniture.
All items must be able to be lifted by two people.
Recycling hard waste
All scrap metal collected via the kerbside hard waste collection is recycled. This year Council will also be recycling all electronic waste and mattress collected as part of the hard waste service.
Hard waste is not:
- Car tyres, car batteries, other batteries and large car parts. Take these to a transfer station or landfill or the drop-off facility in Darebin.
- Automotive fluids, oils, paints and liquid wastes. Take paints and oils to the drop-off facility in Darebin.
- Household chemicals. Take these to a Sustainability Victoria mobile Detox Your Home Collection.
- Green waste. Council collects green waste in a green waste bin every two weeks.
- Recycling. Put items that can be recycled in your recycling bin and Council collects it weekly.
- Asbestos. Because of the health risks of asbestos, Council advises you hire a professional to transport and dispose of asbestos.
- Hazardous waste. The Yellow Pages lists hazardous waste collection companies.
- Waste from commercial and industrial operations. Pay to dispose of this waste.
How to put out hard waste
- Place your hard waste in neat piles on the nature strip and put any small items in boxes so that they do not create windblown litter.
- If you place too much hard waste out only one cubic metre will be collected.
Organised scavenging
Organised or commercial scavenging results in a loss of valuable scrap metal for the hard waste contractors and therefore a more expensive service for Council. If you see someone scavenging for scrap metal please contact Council.
If you have hard waste at other times
- take it to a transfer station or landfill, or
- check our A - Z Guide of Waste and Recycling to see how to responsibily get rid of different things..
Please do not put it on the footpath or nature strip (unless Council has told you to for your annual hard waste collection). This is illegal.
If you have computers to dispose of, please take them to a free Byteback computer recycling facility.
