Waste collection services
2011-12 rubbish, recycling and green waste calendar
New green waste collection arrangements began on Monday 3 October. You should have received an updated calendar for the remainder of 2011 and 2012 in your letterbox in September. This calendar replaces the 2011 waste collection calendar. The new calendar lists the dates that Council collects your bins. You can download a 2011-12 calendar (PDF 7Mb) from this page.
The 2011-12 calendar was accompanied by a Waste Services special edition 2011 Inside Moreland magazine focused on waste services.

Council waste collection service
Council collects rubbish and recycling weekly from all residential, non-residential and non-rateable properties. Green waste is collected fortnightly.
Property owners pay an annual Waste Charge for the bins that Council collects. The Waste charge is based on the size of your rubbish bin.
Bins
When are my bins collected?
Council collects your rubbish and recycling bins on the same day every week and your green waste bin on the same day every two weeks.
Rubbish and recycling bins are usually collected in the morning or early afternoon. Green waste bins are usually collected later in the day.
Once a year Council also collects hard waste. Go to the hard waste collection page to find out when the next scheduled collection will be.
What day?
The day of collection depends on where you live.
- the garbage and recyclable collection locality map (PDF 70Kb) shows when rubbish and recycling is collected in different areas of Moreland. It lists main roads only.
- the waste collection day listing (by suburb and street) (PDF 78Kb) lists every street in Moreland and its collection day.
Moreland Waste and Litter Strategy
The Moreland Waste and Litter Strategy 2007-12 (DOC 97Kb) tries to build on the gains Council has made in waste management and outlines actions that tackle the difficult task of waste minimisation. The strategy directs Council's waste minimisation priorities and projects.
Key objectives of this strategy include:
- reduce waste to landfill by 3% per annum
- increase the amount of waste that is diverted for reuse and recycling
- reduce the amount of litter and dumped rubbish, and
- undertake and promote waste minimisation initiatives.
Waste charge: less waste, less cost
Council wants to reduce waste in Moreland. We encourage residents and businesses to create less waste by recycling and composting. Almost half of the average household garbage bin could be composted. Use a smaller rubbish bin and pay a smaller waste charge.
Current waste charges for the 2011-12 financial year:
80 litres of garbage bin capacity - $72
120 litres of garbage bin capacity - $243
160 litres of garbage bin capacity - $324
200 litres of garbage bin capacity - $405
Where do I put my bins?
Put your rubbish, recycling and green waste bins on the kerb on the edge of the street. Face the bins to the street. Make sure there are no objects within 30 cm of the bin such as a car, tree or another bin.
If you live on a court or bowl place your bins along the straight edges, not on the corners.
What if my bin is not emptied?
Contact Council if your rubbish or recycling bin is not emptied on your collection day. Generally you will be asked to put your bin out again the next working day and Council will collect it.
If your green waste bin is not emptied check your Waste Calendar to make sure it is your collection week. If it is and your bin has not been emptied contact Council. Missed green waste bins are generally picked up within two working days.
What goes in your bins
Put all rubbish in your rubbish bin except for asbestos, household chemicals, motor oil, toner cartridges and medicines. Take these to a transfer station or detox your home collection.
Use your recycling bin for newspapers, magazines, paper, cartons, bottles and jars.
Use a green waste bin for grass cuttings, weeds and small branches and a compost bin for food scraps.
Do not overfill your bins as this can create litter, ensure the lid is closed when placed out for collection. Bins weighing over 30 kilograms will not be collected.
Damaged bins
I
f your bin has been damaged Council will repair or replace it. A bin is considered damaged and will be repaired if it is missing its wheels or lid. If the bin has a split body it will be replaced with a new bin. Damaged bins must be placed on the naturestrip to await repairs/replacement.
Contact Council to report a damaged bin or make a request for repairs or a replacement bin online.
Lost or stolen bins
To prevent theft or damage to your bins bring them back onto your property within 24 hours of your waste collection.
Contact Council to report a lost or stolen bin or make an online request. Once Council has received the request, a replacement bin will be delivered within 48 working hours.
How to order new bins
If you move into a new property and there are no bins already on site, contact Council to order bins and arrange delivery.
Extra rubbish bins
Council allows residents to request extra garbage bin capacity for an additional annual waste charge.
Residents cannot increase their garbage bin capacity by more than 40 litres per application.
To request an additional bin, fill in the request for increased garbage capacity application form (PDF 15Kb) and return the completed form to Council.
Before you request an extra bin, think about reducing your waste by recycling and composting or ordering a green waste bin if you don't already have one.
Extra rubbish bin for medical reasons
If you, or someone living with you, has a medical condition that results in the need for extra garbage capacity, you may be eligible for a concession rate on an extra bin.
To apply, fill in the application for concession - increased garbage capacity based on a medical condition (PDF 16Kb) and return the completed form to Council.
Extra rubbish bin for a large family
If you have a large family and produce more rubbish than you can fit in your existing rubbish bin you may be eligible for a concession rate on an extra bin. Concessions for large families will be based on one or two parents and six immediate children.
To apply, fill in the application for concession - increased garbage capacity based on a large family (PDF 16Kb) and return the completed form to Council.
