Cat trap for stray cats
Cats can go onto your property at night and make noise and destroy property. You can borrow a cat trap from Council to catch stray and pet cats at night.
What is a cat trap?
A cat trap is made of wire and looks like a rectangle box with a metal plate on the floor. It does not hurt the cat.
The Cat Protection Society, Lost Dogs Home and RSPCA use the same traps to catch stray cats and pet cats.
Borrow a cat trap from Council
Contact Council to borrow a trap for five days. Council delivers the trap to you on Monday and collects it on Friday of the same week.
This is a free service to you. There is usually a waiting period to borrow a trap as this service is fairly popular. if you have been given a cat trap from Council and have trapped a cat, you must contact council immediately to notify that a cat has been caught.
Council may decide a property is not suitable and will not leave a Council trap.
Your responsibilities
When you borrow a trap, you agree to look after the cat you trap for a short time. For example, you must feed the trapped cat and keep it warm. If you hurt a trapped animal, it is animal cruelty.
What happens to the cat?
After you trap a cat, contact Council. Council collects the cat and takes it to the Cat Protection Society. Staff assess the cats to see if they can be are adopted. Cats for adoption are microchipped and desexed. Cats that are feral, diseased or not suitable for adoption are painlessly put to sleep.
Possums
Possums are a protected native animal. You need a permit to trap them. You cannot borrow a trap from Council to catch possums.
