Promoting Cycling in Schools

Ride2School

Riding a bike or scooting to school is funRide2School is a program to make it easier for students to walk and ride a bike to school.  It is organised by VicHealth and run by Bicycle Network Victoria.  Council supports the program by offering incentive prizes to participating schools.

The key event in the ride to school program is Ride2School Day, a day in early March when we encourage as many students as possible to either walk, ride or use a foot scooter to get to school.

Other events include monthly 'Hands up' days where schools host a monthly walking or riding to school day and compete other schools to win prizes such as school library books or swim passes at the local pool.

Ride2School at Moreland schools

The following schools are active in the Ride2School program and regularly host 'Hands Up' travel days.

  • Brunswick East Primary School
  • Brunswick North West Primary School
  • Brunswick South West Primary School
  • Coburg North Primary School
  • Moreland Primary School
  • Pascoe Vale North Primary School
  • St Oliver Plunkett's Primary School in Pascoe Vale, and
  • St Fidelis Catholic Primary School in Coburg.

Schools involved in the Ride2School program in Moreland typically get over 55 per cent of their students regularly walking or riding to school and on special event days such as Ride2School day, it is not unusual to get over 85 per cent of students walking or riding.

If your school is doing something great to promote walking and riding to school but isn't included on this list please let us know.

Bike EdFive kids one adult standing with bikes

Bike Ed is program to help primary school students (grades 4 - 6) develop the skills, attitudes and behaviours they need to ride safely and independently on paths and roads.   It is designed to be run by a qualified teacher (and a Bike Ed qualified assistant) as part of the school phys-ed program.

Resources for teachers include:

  • Teacher training - A two day Department of Education and Early Childhood Development  (DEECD) accredited course that demonstrates how to run the Bike Ed program.
  • Teaching resources - Including Instructor's Manual, Information booklets for students and families, and class resources including DVDs, traffic sign cards and traffic scene cards for class discussion - Available from the VicRoads Bookshop.
  • A Class set of bicycles, helmets and other materials needed to run the outdoor practical components of the Bike Ed Course - Available from various locations including Lygon Cycles and Fitzroy Police Station

For more information about the Bike Ed program, visit the VicRoads Bike Ed website.

Riding School Bus

A Riding School Bus is a group of children riding a bicycle along a set route to or from school with two adult volunteers. The adult volunteers are the ‘driver’ and the ‘conductor’.

It is a clever and fun way to get to school and it means roads have less traffic, especially roads near schools.

Brunswick North West Primary School has a Riding School Bus.
