Inactive children get active, more often

The Australian Government’s Active After School Communities (AASC) program research has indicated that more inactive children are becoming involved in sport and physical activity than in previous years.

NISARN

NISARN is the Northern Inclusive Sport and Recreation Network. The network involves Sport and Recreation providers and Disability Support organisations from across Moreland, Darebin and Banyule City Councils.

The networks have been conducted quarterly for the last 18 months and have seen an amazing number of partnerships being developed between the 2 groups. One example is a partnership between the East Coburg Tennis Club and Broadmeadows

Disability Services. 40 participants with a disability were involved in a come and try day at the club. There is a view to continue running a weekly program, encouraging people with a disability to get involved and learn the skills of tennis. Another example is the Brunswick Bowls Club meeting up with the Active After School Communities (AASC) program at a workshop and identifying an opportunity to train up members of the bowls club in beginning coaching. The newly trained beginner coaches will then be eligible to conduct bowls programs with local schools as part of the AASC program. The newly trained coaches will also be more comfortable in delivering a ‘welcome to bowls’ session to be held on Saturday mornings before the pennant.

The Coburg North Rebels Baseball club also conducted an introductory baseball session for adults with an intellectual disability. Lots of fun was had by all the participants and the club is keen to further develop opportunities for people with a disability in the coming season.

Many more opportunities for linking between disability service providers and sports clubs have resulted from the quarterly NISARN workshops. In fact, over 80 actions have been developed by participants as part of the workshops. These actions have been implemented by the clubs and disability service agencies either with support from Council or they have achieved it alone. The next NISARN get together will be hosted by Darebin City Council on 16 November. For more details, please email Leah Sumich or call 9240 2351. Leah is Council’s new Access for All Abilities Officer and she can assist clubs who are keen to target people with a disability to participate in your club.

Leisure Centres in Moreland

Moreland City Council is delighted to announce our new partnership with YMCA Victoria to manage all 6 of our Aquatic and Leisure facilities. Exercising at pools, gyms and group fitness classes is a great way to improve your sport skills and overall health and fitness. If you or your club are interested in using the facilities or having a qualified instructor assist with training programs please don’t hesitate to call your local centre.

School footy tournament at Mutton Reserve, Fawkner

The Northern Saints Football Club, part of the Fawkner-North Coburg Sports Association is proud of their School Footy Tournament Program. On the 27th of August, the club held their third tournament, with over 50 children, boys and girls aged 7 to 10, participating at Charles Mutton Reserve. The program has been running for 2 years now and is becoming increasingly popular with kids and schools.

There are 3 or 4 grid style modified rules games that take place at any one time, and the kids are encouraged to participate and learn the skills of the game with other similarly aged children.

All games are umpired and supervised. The Northern Saints encourage participation from children who attend local schools such as St Matthews, Fawkner Primary, Moomba Park Primary, St Marks, St Pauls, Campbellfield Primary and North Coburg Primary. The schools themselves are very much encouraged to participate and become involved as well at no cost to them. It’s a great way to create bonds between local community schools and sports within the locality.

The kids are provided with drinks and nibbles after the games and are all presented with a medallion and a T-Shirt for their participation. The great aspect for kids and families is that it is all free, no cost to families. All the kids have fun, and it’s a great way for the parents to find out about the club and the people within it.

The club is very much a community minded sports organisation and is very keen and passionate about engaging the young and providing a place where they can feel they can belong and become a part of and participate in all sports, including cricket, AFL, tennis and lawn bowls. The club believes they belong to the local community, and that it is important to let the community know what is available in the area.

The School Footy program has been a big hit so far and the club will continue to fund the program and expand and refine, making it a further success for schools, parents and ultimately the kids.

For further information about the program or schools wanting to participate, please email: info@northernsaints.org.au

Play by the rules

Sport is for everyone, but it is clear that some people are still being excluded and discriminated against (either directly or indirectly, intentionally or not) simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Just because your club says it is inclusive doesn’t mean everyone will automatically feel welcome or safe. So what can sporting clubs do to ensure that they don’t have a culture of homophobia and exclusion? And how do we make sport genuinely inclusive? Read more at the Play by the Rules website.
